Free computer help jump-start the lives of children

Davis said the most common computer products for children receiving television sets. He estimated the group at around 600,000 pounds worth of televisions this year alone.

"On average there are 2.6 TVs per household," says Davis. "It's more than people. So many televisions there."

What they can not refurbish, recycle computers for children through the Ontario government - a process that actually becomes a profit.

"The sad thing is, even in quantities that make only 15 percent of all electronics recyclers," says Davis. "Many people just leave it in their houses, or to throw it in the trash or other illegal disposal methods. And when that happens, it damages the environment."

To get a free computer, the potential recipients go through the referral process. Davis said that most referrals come from schools and social service groups, such as CAS and the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County.

Michele légère, settlement counselor for the Multicultural Council, was among those who appeared on computers for Kids workshop and store on Tuesday to express their thanks. She said the MCC had received at least 20 computers from the group this year.

Executive Director Chris Davis estimated they're giving away more than 390 computer this year, 80 of these in recent months.

"It can really help jump start a person's life," he said.

Davis said that in today's labor market, knowledge of computers is important in virtually all areas - as a serious shortage of computer reconstruction of a young man.

"With this economy worsens, the need grows," he said. "A computer is very important today. Get some practice in the early days is beneficial to their future profession."

Computers for children is work, since 2004. They invite the public to donate outdated or broken electronics, as they are cleaned and returned to society.

While Davis acknowledges that 90 percent of what is being donated is unusable, it is still encouraging the public to two drops rubbished out of their products. "To work or not, we'll take it."

A grateful recipient was a 15-year Mary Wallimohammad who said that the computer will be a great help for her 14-year-old cousin.
